Deserts are formed in when rain clouds drop rain in one area (mainly caused by wind), leaving the other area dry.

Deserts, though being just one of the many different classes of land forms takes up a whopping 1/5 of the earths surface. Deserts can be hot and sandy, for example the Sahara desert in Africa, or the various deserts in the U.S and Mexico. But they can also be frozen wastelands like Antarctica. This is because what you need to be a desert inst determined by how hot and sandy it is, but rather how much moisture it gets from the sky. Determining if a region is a desert or not is based on if it averages on 10 inches (or 25 cm) per year from precipitation.
