An island is formed in a very interesting way (in my opinion). Underwater volcanoes erupt, and as the lava breaks the surface of the water, the island is formed.

An island can be anything as long as it has water on all sides of the land, and is smaller than a continent, such as Madagascar, the Mediterranean islands, even Greenland is an island. So why are some islands bigger than others? This is because of just how wide the volcanic eruption was spread, and by how powerful the eruption was.
