Plateaus can be formed in many ways. One is for magma underground swells up, trying to escape. But instead of a volcano the magma is spread along a large distance. They are also formed be glacial erosion.

Plateaus are elevated areas of earth, similar to a mountain, but with a relatively flat top. They can often be found in desert regions, but the largest are often amongst mountain regions, for example Auytanepui in Venezuela. The highest plateau is located in Tibet, and is about 500 m(1600 ft) above sea level and takes up around 2,500,000 km2!
